I'm an exchange student from California living in Germany for the 09-10 school year a.k.a. the best decision of my life. {sara.robillard@gmail.com}

newspapers;

Today I attempted to read the newspaper while eating lunch and even though it took me forever and a day I understood the main idea so I’m proud of myself. The article was about how English is germany is slowly invading the German language. It’s used by the Elites because English is the language of all things business and science. Then for the younger generation, English is seen as “cool” and “hip”. At the end of the article the author wrote a list of his top 10 german words.  This was my favorite entry:

(in German for those exchange students who may read this)

Geschirrspülmaschine-

Das schwierigste Wort, das ich lernen musste. Als ich es auswendig konnte, empfand ich das als kleinen Triumph. Eigentlich ist es ar kein Wort, sondern ein kompletter Satz.

(english)

Dish washer-

The most difficult word I had to learn. It felt like a small triumph once I knew it from memory. It’s actually not a word, but a complete sentence.

That pretty much sums of the German language right there.
